The abbey of Cadouin, located in a deep valley of the forest of Bessède (between Bergerac and Sarlat), was founded in 1115 by Géraud de Salles and affiliated to the Cistercian order 4 years later. From this first phase of construction, the abbey church and the Romanesque base of the conventual buildings still remain.
After abandoning the site during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), the cloister was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. It is a true masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic art.
The monastic activity of Cadouin ended with the French Revolution.
Nearly ten centuries of history float here, classified historical monument and inscribed on the World Heritage of Unesco under the ways of Santiago de Compostela.
Information- visit of the cloister by your own - about 40 minutes - audioguide available - discovery workshops (July / August)
